Small Beer-ness Saturday

Small Beer-ness Saturday

I don’t know about you, but I think this whole push to open stores on Thanksgiving so individuals can get a jump-start on their holiday shopping kind of sucks. While, yes, I am sure there will be some great deals to be had, it is not only encouraging shoppers to excuse themselves from their Thanksgiving Dinner, but also requires a certain number of workers to do the same. Gotta love commercialism. (That was sarcasm, by the way.) This year, stay at home on Thanksgiving and spend time with your family and friends. And instead of supporting big box chains on Black Friday, support your local, small businesses on November 30th, also known as Small Business Saturday. By definition, craft beer is a small business so be sure to not only drink local but shop local, too. Below is a list of local bottle shops and breweries to shop at on Saturday. (This is by no means an exhaustive list; be sure to explore your neighborhood to find more craft beer treasures!)

bg_kcmhBottles and Cans

 4109 N Lincoln Avenue
Chicago, IL 60618

Opened earlier this year by husband-and-wife team in the North Center neighborhood of Chicago, Bottles and Cans sells over 1000 different beers as well as wine and spirits. Their main focus is on small batch and family-owned companies, so you can support this small business that supports other small businesses! They frequently host tastings so you can sample before you buy.

Fischman Liquors

4780 North Milwaukee Avenue
Chicago, IL 60630

Fischman Liquors is two great small businesses in one! On one side, it is a dive-bar-meets-craft-beer-bar and on the other, it is a craft beer bottle shop. Located in the Jefferson Park neighborhood of Chicago, Fischman’s frequently hosts events (upcoming events include Phillippine Typhoon Relief on November 27th and Fischmas on December 14) and food trucks. It was even featured on Food Network’s The Great Food Truck Race.

Half Acre Beer Co.

4257 N Lincoln Ave
Chicago, IL 60618

In addition to loving beer, I love beer stuff. You know what I mean; t-shirts, glasses, hoodies. And Half Acre has some of the best ‘stuff’ around. Stop by their retail store to pick up gifts, and while you’re there pick up a growler for yourself.

brewcampBrew Camp

4639 N Damen Ave
Chicago, IL 60625

Have a homebrewer on your shopping list this year? Head on over to Brew Camp for all of your homebrew shopping needs. In addition to equipment, malt and hops, Brew Camp also offers classes and events. Check out their website for their event/class calendar.

logo_3Piece Pizzeria & Brewery

1927 W North Avenue
Chicago, IL 60622

Is there a better pairing than beer and pizza? I think not; the two just go together! And Piece is a great place to hang out, catch the game, and drink exceptional house brews. Piece offers gift cards that you can pick up at the brewery or order online.
